Beckwourth Pass and the Sierra Valley
The adventure starts when you crest Beckwourth Pass on Highway 70,
about a mile west of the 395 turnoff. This is the lowest pass through
the Sierras and was discovered by Jim Beckwourth in 1850. It is
at the top of this gentle pass that you catch your first breath-taking
glimpse of the Sierra Valley, the largest high mountain valley in
North America. Along the south end of the valley on Highway 49 lie
the towns of Loyalton, Sierraville and Calpine. Life has a special
tempo here; a little slower, a little quieter, a little more relaxed.
Friendly neighbors, historic homes and ranches, and wide open spaces
are just a few of the forgotten luxuries you’ll find here.
|
|
Along Highway 70 in the valley are the hamlets of Chilcoot, Vinton, and Beckwourth.
Each community has been a gathering center for generations of ranchers,
farmers, and townsfolk. Catch a cowboy poetry show at the grange
hall in Vinton and get a taste for the way life was—and continues
to be—in this wonderful, magical place. |

Frenchman, Dixie, and Davis
One of modern man’s greatest accomplishments is the California
Aqueduct and eastern Plumas is home to two of the aqueduct’s
vital manmade lakes. Frenchman Reservoir, north of Chilcoot, is
a sparkling blue jewel in the rocky outcroppings of the high desert.
Exceptional fishing, camping, and water sports can be found here,
as well as some rare and beautiful homesite and recreation properties.
|
Nearby is Dixie Valley, a lush valley of recreational and vacation home properties.
Mostly inaccessible in winter, Dixie Valley is nevertheless a popular
destination for those who really want to get away from it all.
As you move out of the valley and into the trees, you happen upon
one of the most popular and fast-growing areas in eastern Plumas—Grizzly
Road. Grizzly Road is the gateway to Lake Davis, the second aqueduct
lake and one of the most famous trout fisheries in California. Tucked
in among the trees along Grizzly Creek are properties that will
delight and astound you. From the luxurious resort properties at
Grizzly Ranch, to the large parcel properties of Grizzly Creek Estates
and the eye-popping views from Davis Highlands at the lake, this
is one great area! |
| Plumas County's
only city Built by Western Pacific Railroad at the
turn of the 20th century, the little company town of Portola has become
the hub of eastern Plumas. Both the railroad and the wild and scenic
Feather River pass through the middle of this small city, and a classic
arched bridge spans the two and connects the north to the south side.
Older homes are enjoying new facelifts, and new homes are being built
in wonderful older neighborhoods, giving you housing opportunities
that are almost unheard of anymore. Portola is the civic center for
the east county where you will find outstanding medical services,
including trauma and cardiac care, schools, a library, parks, shopping,
and more. You can even become an engineer for a day at the world-famous
Feather River Railroad Museum! Drop by our Coldwell Banker Portola
office next to Bank of America on the highway. We’ll give you
a few ideas on fun things to do while you’re here! |
